Chapter Twenty
We didn’t have to wait long. Despite the fact that Paddy was teaching a class this semester, he was also bored. He loved any chance he got to yell at students. Breaking curfew or being out when they weren’t supposed to be out got their chore responsibilities increased, or worse.
Paddy appeared as we came over the field, as if he had been waiting for just such an opportunity as this. He came storming out of the castle, his hands waving in the air as he raged his way toward us.
“What is the meaning of this? I knew you’d be trouble if you were allowed to stay at Noble Fae. And here you are. Come with me,” he ordered, jamming his hands onto his hips.
He looked ridiculous, although I would of course never have said so. His mouth was drawn into a mulish line as he glared at me.
“This is McGryth the Tracker. He’s here to see the crown prince,” I said.
“I know who he is,” Paddy snapped. “I’ll thank you to send him away. He isn’t supposed to be here any more than you were.”
“I don’t think we need to speak to her so harshly,” said a voice from behind him.
Having come out of the castle with Batham at his side, the principal went directly over to McGryth. “McGryth! So good to see you,” he said.
Batham trailed behind the principal and came to a halt near Paddy, but still a healthy distance away. The three of us looked on as the two men treated each other like old friends. When the principal noticed our questioning glances, he smiled and said, “We went to school together back in the day. We’ve been fast friends ever since.” Then he turned to McGryth and asked, “What brings you here, my friend?”
“Unfortunately, I come with urgent news, which I can only give directly to the prince,” said McGryth.
“You could have come to me. Are you hiding in the mountains?” the principal asked.
McGryth grimaced. “Of course I knew I could trust you, my old friend, but I didn’t know who else I could trust,” he explained, his eyes flicking to Paddy. The movement wasn’t lost on the captain of the guards.
“Now see here,” Paddy started in.
“Don’t get all offended over the truth,” Batham interrupted.
“I will not be interrupted by students who do not know their place,” Paddy fumed.
“Let’s get inside. I have to tell Colly that he has another meeting today,” said Batham.
“You’ll come to my quarters and get cleaned up,” said the principal.
The tracker did look like he’d been living in a cave, and some cleaning up would definitely be an improvement. “What about my unicorn?” he asked.
“Taken care of. Don’t worry. I can see she’s a fussy girl, but we have the best stable hands in the kingdom,” said the principal.
“When will the meeting take place? I want to be there,” I said to Batham’s back.
The prince’s guard glanced over his shoulder at me. “Of course you want to be there. That much is obvious,” he said with a grin.
